Following in the footsteps of the very successful velib scheme set up last year in Paris, last week Ken Livingstone announced a similar scheme for London.

The new scheme will see around 6,000 bicycles available for hire from special stands set up around the city.

Paris’ velib scheme involves 10,000 bikes which can be picked up and dropped at about a thousand locations across the city. Tickets cost one euro for a day, five euros for a week or 29 euros for a year.

See the Independent for more details.

  1. This sounds a fab idea. Especially in London, the busiest traffic city in the world. More people need to use bikes especially with the petrol prices, plus travelling charges now in London!
